The children of Israel spent around 400 years in Egypt--dozens of generations came and went living under a social, economic and political system that seemed largely indestructible and everlasting. When change did finally take place, however, though the people were emphatically told, and more or less understood, what their new reality would eventually be--the Promised Land--not even their leader, Moses, knew precisely how they would get there or just how long it would take them to arrive.
