Meet Ezra Picket, Mike's only true friend at the law firm, and the only one who just might not stab him in the back.
Dedication
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Jeremiah 17:9
Preface
My friend Casey, like me, did not set
out to be a criminal.
We had graduated from fine law schools
with the best of
intentions, but, like me, he had slipped
into dangerous
habits under the slow pressure of
circumstance.

Ezra was a corporate lawyer specializing
in
securities law with no chance of making
partner. Why he
was still hanging around, I was not
completely sure. He
sported thick curly black hair combed
straight back, wore
copper-colored, semi-rimless,
rectangular-framed glasses
that lent his handsome face a serious
look, and enjoyed all
the social perquisites incident to a
fashion model’s body,
even though he claimed that he seldom
worked out.
As far as I knew Ezra was a good enough
lawyer,
and I could never figure out why he
hadn’t made more of a
splash at the firm. Ezra was apparently
one of those
unfortunate practitioners who did his
job so competently
and unspectacularly that no one paid
much attention to him.
I liked to talk to him, though, from
time to time. For such a
diligent, straight-arrow sort of guy, he had a wicked sense
of humor when he was moved to show it.
Otherwise, he
was a calm steady fellow, at least at
the office, who was
easy enough to get along with and,
unlike me, hardly ever
tried to impress anybody with how clever
he was.
Ezra leaned back in his swivel chair and
stretched.
“How’s the love life?”
Mike Talbert is tasked by his boss with devising a
scheme to deep-six an incriminating draft email from the personal computer of a
prominent politician. Someone with presidential ambitions. And Mike must
perform this treachery without risking charges of evidence tampering or
obstruction of justice. Never one to let ethics or the law get in the way
of his ambitions, Mike comes up with a plan to enlist professional thieves to
steal the computer. The trouble is, the plan works better than Mike or his boss
could have hoped, but complications arise when the women in their lives turn on
them in unexpected ways. Will things ever go right for Mike?
